Trump Administration to Issue 50% Food Stamp Benefits in November

The national government revealed it would supply limited support to millions of SNAP users as the ongoing federal closure approached a historic period.

Funding Decrease Details

Amid mounting uncertainty for the approximately 42 million people participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the Department of Agriculture declared it would use emergency funds to maintain assistance, though at merely 50% of the standard allotment recipients usually get.

Resources for the program legally expired on the weekend due to the federal closure, now in its 34th consecutive day with little indication of ending.

Legal Developments

The announcement came in a legal document after prior denials to release urgent funding on alleged legal grounds. A judicial authority had decided the leadership could not refuse program funds due to the shutdown.

Following the judicial ruling, the president declared it would be "privileged" to authorize necessary funding for the program.

Implementation Challenges

Officials suggested that money could start flowing by Wednesday, but highlighted the need for additional direction from the courts on how to legally redirect resources for SNAP benefits.

  • Various authorities have indicated it will take days or even weeks to distribute assistance to low-income families.
  • Long queues have been observed at charities around the United States.
  • In several locations, public facility areas were transformed into help locations.

Local Crisis Measures

Several local governments, such as New York, Oregon, and Virginia, announced emergency declarations to provide interim money for assistance. However, these amounts were expected to be a limited percentage of the regular government funding.

The government costs for SNAP amount to approximately $8 billion per month in the United States.
